Country left stunned after president goes missing

Malawians have been left a bewildered lot after their president went “missing” following his departure for an official trip abroad.
President Peter Mutharika left Malawi on September 15, 2016 to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, US and has not been seen since.

The UN General Assembly meeting ended on September 26 but the president never returned home.
Worried and anxious Malawians took to social media with the hashtag #BringBackMutharika with the hope of trying to find their president.

Hopefully our president is safe and healthy. Please world, help us bringing back our president #BringBackMutharika

The Malawian government refused to release the president’s travel itinerary and instead vaguely gave the response that he was attending “high-level meetings” in the U.S would return soon.

His absence has also sparked off rumors regarding his health and whether he was undergoing specialized treatment in the US.
In 2012, President Bingu wa Mutharika, the current president’s brother, died while receiving treatment in South Africa.
