Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has been the topic of discussion over the weekend after he made a statement that was perceived rather treasonous.
While attending a burial of former MP Wavinya Ndeti’s husband on Friday in Machakos County, Sonko caused a spectacle after he declared himself acting Head of State since President Uhuru kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto were out of the country, a move that sparked public outrage.
However, many asked what was the reason behind his shocking statements which questioned his leadership skills, even compelling opposition leaders at the event including Odinga to walk out.
Critics have termed this as Sonko’s efforts to suppress the opposition in the CORD stronghold in an unofficial means, a move that was perceived lame by many. Sonko is said to have tried to show his might and superiority and that of the government in the region to overshadow the opposition leaders which proved rather treasonous to many.
As if not enough, the flamboyant Senator now claims it was a show of cowardice and disrespect for the Presidency, for Raila to leave the event while he was addressing mourners.
“I acted in my capacity as the Presidential representative to read to the leaders, family members and residents in attendance the President’s speech. This seemed to rub the opposition leaders, to whom I duly respect, the wrong way. A clear act of cowardice and disrespect to the Presidency as they walked out during my time,” Sonko stated.
Sonko further accused the media of maliciously editing the clip in which he is heard declaring himself acting President. Head of public prosecution Keriako Tobiko directed the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to commence immediate investigations into Sonko’s statements.
